Bread of Heaven or Here On Gabriola
Penny Sidor © July 2009

I see the morning news
And I am filled with sadness
It seems this lovely world
Is on the brink of madness

I weep for clear cut forests
I smell the greenhouse gasses
Politicians, business leaders
Rip-off artists, horses’ asses

Fish farms destroy the salmon
Plastic bags fill up the seas
Malls and parking lots abound
Where once stood fields and trees

The ferry’s getting pricey
Garbage pickup’s getting slow
The RDN is bossy
They keep asking for more dough

But here on Gabriola
I have a ray of hope
Something gives me courage
And no, it isn’t dope

Here on Gabriola
A tiny flame gives light
In the darkness of these times
I see a candle bright

Here on Gabriola
A finer mind’s at work
Someone’s pursuing excellence
Someone who doesn’t shirk

I rise to meet the challenge
A new day lies ahead
When I sit down to breakfast
I’m so glad that I’m not dead

I reach for morning coffee
I reach for morning toast
By now I’m feeling wonderful
But I don’t like to boast

You want to know my secret
I’ll tell you by and by
Why I stay on Gabriola
And why I never cry

For in this sorry world
Of chicanery and fakery
Here on Gabriola…
We have Slow Rise Bakery.
